The Introduction: What is Cockatiel ?
The scientific name for Cockatiel is Nymphicus hollandicus. It is said
to be in the parakeet family (with long wing and tail). However, some expert
refer Cockatiel to Cockatoo family, because of their crest which look like the
one that Cockatoo have. Some time ago, Cockatiel is referred as ‘Cockatoo
Parrot’ which bear the scientific name of “Psittacus
hovaehollandiae”. The origin of Cockatiel is Australia. However, how Cockatiel can be found all over the world, and I think it is only the second in term of the very common pet parrot (first ranking is budgerigar). Cockatiel is believe to enter England around 1800 and to America around 1910.
Cockatiel in the wild is gray in
colour. However, when it is widely keep, the breeder have start to create more
variation in the color. Based on the “mandel’s laws of heredity”, now
there are wide variety of Cockatiels colour; including albino, Lutino, Pearl
and pied.
