Keeping lory/lorikeet

Postby anand_mike » Tue Apr 05, 2005 12:02 pm

:D

I am very interested in keeping lory/lorikeet. But, after i did a lot of studies on them i understand that these birds are quite messy birds and suitable to keep them in an aviary. I also understand that these birds needs special care.

I also would like to tell that i have kept red lory, alexandrin parakeet and a pair of fischer love birds before before when i was studying in primary school. Actually these birds belongs to my uncle and he give it to my brother.

At that time I didn't understand the red lory behaviour but now understood it better. We kept it in a 24+16+16 cage beside the other birds cage. This red lory love to whistle and its character really amazing. The most shoking part is it will open its cage door itself and go to the other birds cage and fight with themand hurt them.I didn't notice any difficulty to keep it. After many years this red lory just ran away and the other birds also started to die.

And now i would like to keep the same red lory (maybe other kind of lorikeets). So, i need opinion from anyone to help me in this matter.
I would like to know what kind lory/lorikeet can be kept in cage.

So far, for me personally I haven't meet anyone in Kuala Lumpur who keep a pet lories. However, I found that lots of pet shop in Kuala Lumpur Area that sell lori (some time got stock but sometime no stock)... So, I guest some have bough the birds and keep them as pet.

If anyone in Malaysia keep lori as pet and have some experiance in lori... pls do not hesitate to share it with all of us here...

btw, Anand..if you come to KL and need to c some lori... you can check out Koi Lim pet shop in brickfield... they will have some lori sometimes...

anand, all lory can be kept in cages as big as you can afford, mine r like 5x3x3feet. yes these birds are noisy and messy and should be kept in hanging cages in a total washable enviroment/garden. these birds need special diet and eating sunflower seeds alone will shorten their lives, so i read. i feed them lots of friuts and nectar.

Hi adfoo,

Refer to the cage, do you put them in a pair or in a flock. I understand that lori/keet can be very messy and noisy, I am not sure if we keep them in a pair (not in a flock), can we reduce the problem?

Best regards,

hi tanin,
lories are highly active birds, when kept alone they may become bored and develop bad habit like feather plucking. keeping them in a flock do solve problems if you are lucky that get along but generally they dont.(some times in a mix aviary, adding or subtracting a bird can be disasterous)
lory are noisy, messy and can be very aggressive during breeding season.
the noise and messy part can be solve easily if kept in a garden area (total washable area)
to me the beautiful of these birds are worth all the trouble.
